FAQ
With the change in venue from Rhino's facility, how will that impact programming?
Not much. In some ways, it'll actually be better. We won't be able to hit real baseball and softballs at Wilson (only tennis balls, wiffles, heavies, ragballs, etc.), and there won't be as much groundball instruction, because of the gym surface being bad for hops. We have plans to work around that. (Heavies are actually great for this.) In the past, we've taught A LOT of sliding skills, and we'll figure out how we're going to have to do that. The additional space in the weightrooms and hitting areas is going to be awesome though.
What ages is this for?
This is designed for any ballplayer who is ready to take instruction and can sustain their attention while at a practice for a prolonged time. (Most 10 year-olds should be a good fit. It gets dicey the younger we go.) We do not want anyone younger than 9, without a parent helping out. We go through high-school on the upper end, and will have a couple of college kids at times this year.
Will kids be pitching?
All of the young baseball players will get some pitching training, but that won't be the focus of the throwing and arm care programs.
Can parents help out at training?
Absolutely. Part of what we do is to increase the skills of parent-coaches. Ideally, we're looking for 6-8 parent helpers that can make it each week. They'd be asked to do things like throw front toss to kids, hit groundballs, or help organize kids during strength training. In return, those folks will get coach-style training from our instructors, helping the parents understand the movements and skills we're teaching at a whole new level. Email John if you're interested in this, and we'll get you an additional discount!
Will we be playing any tournaments?
No. We are teachers. Our focus is entirely on the kids and what they learn.
Should I sign-up even if we're going to miss a few sessions?
We don't anticipate both Friday and Saturday sessions filling up. We will have room if a few folks a week need some flexibility. So, in the event that you know your ballplayer will miss a week, reach out. Ask if there's room for them to come to the next practice that they're not normally signed up for (So, if you sign up for Friday, you'd ask if they can come on the next Saturday, and vice versa.) We will always want to say yes, but we have had to say 'no' once or twice in the past. We cannot accommodate someone looking to use this as a feature and not an offer of goodwill, but we will do whatever we can to get the kids in the gym.
Come on, there've got to be some hidden costs here -- equipment, gear, something. . .
Not that we can think of. We'd love to spring for tshirts for kids so they have something stunning to wear for training. But depending on how many kids we'll have, we could be cutting it close on staying in the black -- this price is shockingly low if you price out other venues. (1/3 of the cost of some of the local competition, and we think there's no one who instructs better than us.)
